Our Story: 50 Years of Connecting Southwest New Mexico
For 50 years, our mission has been simple: to provide reliable, essential communication services that connect and empower our communities. As a local company, we believe that when our communities thrive, we all thrive. We’re not just your service provider; we’re your partner in building a better, more connected future.
Our story began in 1974 when Western New Mexico Telephone Company was founded by Jack C. Keen with a promise to serve our local community. Over the decades, we grew from our roots, expanding our service through areas like Cliff, Glenwood, Reserve, and Luna to eventually cover a territory of over 15,000 square miles. Today, doing business as WNM Communications, we’ve continued to grow while holding onto our local values, expanding services into Silver City, Deming, Socorro, and Las Cruces.
Building for What's Next
We’re not just maintaining our network. We’re rebuilding it for the next generation. That means real investment in the infrastructure that will power Southwest New Mexico for decades, not just patchwork fixes to keep the lights on.
- A Faster Baseline for Everyone. Our 5-Year Plan brings a minimum of 100/20 Mbps to every customer — enough to work from home, stream in HD, and keep multiple devices running without the network becoming the bottleneck.
- Reaching the Places Others Skip. Through the USDA Reconnect Grant, we’re building major fiber expansions in Luna and Socorro Counties — bringing reliable, high-speed access to communities that have waited too long for it.
- A Network Built to Last. Over 750 miles of fiber optics now run through our service area — the physical backbone that makes everything else on this page possible.
This is what “local provider” should mean: not just service today, but a real stake in tomorrow.
A Commitment to Our Community
We’re more than than fiber lines and equipment. We’re your neighbor and we invest in our communities the same way a neighbor would: showing up, pitching in, and sticking around.
Keeping Families Connected: When the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended, we didn’t wait for someone else to fix it. We built our own Extended Broadband Discount (EBD) program, so local local families never lost the internet access they depend on.
Investing in Students: Every year, we award scholarships to graduating seniors at ten high schools across our services area because the next generation of this community deserves a running start.
Strengthening Local Institutions: From gigabit fiber for area school districts through the Southwest Consortium, to supporting organizations like the Silver City Gospel Mission, we back the institutions our neighbors rely on.
