What is the charge to move my DSL to a different location?

Moving your DSL service to a new location is essentially treated as a new installation due to the technical work involved. If you sign a new service agreement, we can waive the standard $100 installation fee. If you prefer not to renew your service agreement, the $100 installation fee will apply.

What should I do if I’m going to move?

If you are planning to move, please contact us before your move date. We will determine if your new address is within our service area and discuss options for transferring your services.

Email Service

How can I reduce the amount of spam I receive?

Besides using a good spam filter, you can reduce spam by being cautious about where you share your email address online, avoiding clicking on suspicious links or attachments, never replying to spam, and using a separate email address for online sign-ups or public forums.

How can I reduce the spam I recieve

Spam, or junk email, is a common issue. The most effective way to manage it is by using a spam filter. Most email providers and email software include built-in filters; ensure yours is active and configured. These filters learn to identify unwanted messages, often using advanced techniques like Bayesian filtering. Never open or reply to emails that claim to be spam filters, as these are often spam themselves.

How many email addresses do I get with my high-speed Internet service?

The number of email addresses included depends on your specific service tier; most plans come with at least five. If you require more, additional email addresses can be purchased through us. Alternatively, you can use a free web-based email service like Gmail or Outlook.com.

Is there a size limit to the attachments I can send via email?

Yes, there is a size limit for email attachments. Our servers currently allow you to send a single file or a group of files in one email, with a combined maximum size of 10MB.

What does the "account is locked" or "pop.lock is busy" error message mean?

This error typically means your email account is currently being accessed by another device or program. This can happen if you’re checking email from multiple locations simultaneously (e.g., your home computer and your phone), or if another application is attempting to access the same account.

To resolve this, ensure no other program or person is trying to access your email. Then, close your email application, wait at least 15 minutes, and try again. If the error persists, please contact our customer service.

Equipment & Home Network

Do I need a wireless router to connect devices?

If you want to connect devices via Wi-Fi (wirelessly), then yes, you will need a wireless router. If you only plan to connect devices using Ethernet cables, a wired-only router would suffice, but wireless routers are far more common today.

Does Wi-Fi signal affect my speed?

Yes, a weak or interfered Wi-Fi signal can significantly reduce your effective speed, even if your internet plan is fast. Obstacles like walls, distance from the router, and interference from other devices (like microwaves or cordless phones) can degrade Wi-Fi performance.

How can I improve my Wi-Fi signal?

To improve your Wi-Fi, place your router in a central, open location away from obstructions. Avoid placing it near large metal objects or other electronics that can cause interference. For larger homes or dead zones, consider using a Wi-Fi extender, mesh Wi-Fi system, or upgrading to a more powerful router.

How many devices can I connect to my router?

Most modern routers can theoretically support many devices (often 250+ unique IP addresses). However, the practical limit depends on your internet speed and the demands of your devices. High-bandwidth activities like streaming and gaming on multiple devices will consume more bandwidth, potentially slowing down the connection for everyone.

I already have my own high-speed modem: can I use it?

You are welcome to use your own high-speed modem, provided it is compatible with our systems. WNMC also offers modems for a small monthly fee, which includes ongoing maintenance and free replacement if the modem becomes faulty during your service. Alternatively, you may purchase a WNMC modem outright.

I don't want to be tied to one room. Can I create a wireless network here?

Yes, you can easily create a wireless network (Wi-Fi) to access the internet from anywhere within your router’s range. All you need is a wireless router; simply connect it to your DSL modem with an Ethernet cable. For your security, it’s crucial to set up strong password protection for your new wireless network.

What is a router and how does it work with my DSL modem?

A router acts as a central hub for your home or office network. Your DSL modem connects to the internet, and the router connects to the modem to distribute that internet connection to multiple devices via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cables, allowing them all to share the same internet access.

What is the difference between a modem and a router?

A modem connects your home to your internet service provider’s network, bringing the internet signal into your home. A router then takes that internet signal from the modem and distributes it to all your devices, creating a local network and often broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal for wireless access.

What special equipment do I need for DSL?

To get DSL service, you don’t need any special software. We supply the external DSL modem. Your computer will, however, require an Ethernet adapter to connect to the modem. Most modern computers have one built-in, but you may need to check your computer’s specifications or have one installed if it doesn’t.

Why should I use a surge protector or battery backup?

Power surges can severely damage or destroy your valuable electronic equipment, including modems, monitors, and computers. A surge protector helps divert excess voltage away from your devices, while a battery backup (Uninterruptible Power Supply or UPS) offers surge protection and provides temporary power during outages, allowing you to safely shut down equipment. Investing in one can save you significant costs by protecting your electronics.

General

What are adware and spyware, and how do I get rid of them?

Adware and spyware are unwanted software that often download onto your computer via the internet, sometimes without your full awareness (e.g., bundled with other downloads or from clicking deceptive links).

  • Adware primarily displays unsolicited advertisements, such as pop-ups.
  • Spyware secretly monitors your computer activity, like tracking websites you visit or logging your keystrokes, often sending this information to third parties.

Both can compromise your privacy and slow down your system. To remove them, use reputable anti-malware software designed to detect and eliminate adware and spyware.

Lifeline

Do I qualify for reduced phone and internet rates through Lifeline?

Lifeline is a federal program that offers discounted phone and internet service to eligible low-income households. Qualifying households can receive up to $9.25 off monthly, with an enhanced discount of up to $34.25 per month for those living on Tribal lands. Eligibility is based on participation in certain federal assistance programs (like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, FPHA, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit) or meeting specific household income guidelines (at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines). You must apply through the USAC’s Lifeline Support Center and then enroll with WNM Communications.

How do I apply for the Lifeline program?

To apply for the Lifeline program, you must go through the USAC’s Lifeline Support Center. Once approved for the program, you will then need to sign up with WNM Communications as your participating phone or internet company to receive the benefit on your bill. An annual recertification process is required to keep your benefit current.

What is Enhanced Tribal Lifeline and who qualifies for it?

Enhanced Tribal Lifeline offers an increased discount of up to $34.25 per month for eligible consumers living on Tribal lands. In addition to the standard Lifeline federal assistance programs, you may qualify if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or if you participate in Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Head Start (income-qualified households only), Tribal TANF, or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations.

What kinds of discounts are available through the Lifeline program?

Lifeline assistance lowers the cost of basic monthly local telephone, internet, or bundled services by the allowable discount credits. Additionally, eligible consumers can receive Toll Limitation Service support at no charge, which helps avoid incurring long-distance charges. For customers on Tribal lands, a one-time Tribal Link-Up credit of up to $100.00 may also be available for initial local telephone service installation.

Phone Service

I pay for Caller ID, so why don’t I receive Caller ID information on every call?

Certain types of telephone equipment or phone calls are currently incompatible with Caller ID technology e.g. automatic dialing systems, cell phones, etc.

If my electricity goes out, will my phone go out, too?

Whether your phone works during a power outage depends on its type:

  • VoIP: Requires electricity for your internet, so it won’t work.
  • Traditional (corded): Will continue to function.
  • Cordless: Needs electricity to operate, so it won’t work.

Security & Online Safety

Are there free parental control options available?

Yes, many operating systems (like Windows, macOS) and web browsers offer built-in parental controls. Google Family Link and Apple’s Screen Time provide comprehensive options for managing Android and iOS devices, respectively. Your router might also have basic content filtering features.

Can a firewall protect me from all types of online threats?

A firewall is a critical component of your security, but it’s not a complete solution. It primarily protects against unauthorized network access. You also need up-to-date antivirus software, safe Browse habits, and regular software updates to protect against malware, phishing, and other online threats.

Can adware or spyware steal my passwords or financial information?

Spyware, particularly advanced forms like keyloggers, can indeed capture sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details as you type them. While adware’s primary goal isn’t data theft, it can sometimes bundle with more malicious components that do. Always use strong security measures.

How can I keep my kids safe on the Internet?

The most effective approach to online safety for children involves both education and technology. Start by having open conversations with your children about online dangers and responsible internet usage. Supplement this with parental control software, which can help you filter content, manage screen time, and monitor their online activities.

How often should I update my computer/software?

For Windows and antivirus software, enable automatic updates to ensure you receive critical security patches and bug fixes as soon as they’re available. For other applications, check for updates regularly or enable their automatic update features.

What happens if I don't update my computer?

Neglecting updates leaves your computer vulnerable to new security threats and malware. You may also experience more software bugs, crashes, reduced performance, and compatibility issues with newer programs or hardware.

What is a firewall? Do I need one?

A firewall is a security system that protects your computer from unauthorized access and malicious network traffic. It acts as a barrier, blocking hackers and preventing data theft. All internet users, especially those with broadband connections, should use a firewall. Modern operating systems typically include a built-in firewall, which you should ensure is active.

What is the best way to secure my wireless network?

The best way to secure your wireless network is to use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption, create a strong and unique password for your Wi-Fi, and change the default administrative password for your router. Regularly update your router’s firmware for the latest security patches.

What specific online dangers should I discuss with my children?

Discuss the risks of talking to strangers online, sharing personal information (full name, address, school, photos), cyberbullying (both as victim and perpetrator), inappropriate content, and the permanence of online posts. Emphasize that anything shared online can be seen by many people.

Why am I getting an "incorrect password" error even though I know it's right?

This usually indicates a simple typing mistake. Double-check your username, ensure Caps Lock is off, and verify that there are no extra numbers, spaces, or punctuation in your password.

Why am I repeatedly prompted for my password on my Windows computer?

Persistent password requests can be due to incorrect entry, Caps Lock being on, or issues with Windows login credentials. First, carefully verify your username and password, ensuring no extra spaces or punctuation.

Why doesn't WNMC actively filter my internet access and email?

WNMC does filter your email on the server side for most known viruses and junk mail. However, this comprehensive filtering isn’t foolproof, which is why we recommend using up-to-date virus protection and a spam filter on your own computer for added security. WNMC does not filter your general internet access. We believe our customers should have the freedom to decide how they use their internet connection.

Why is it important to do my updates?

Keeping your software updated is crucial for your computer’s health. Regular Windows Updates and up-to-date antivirus protection are essential for security, stability, and performance.

Services & Plans

Can I connect more than one computer to my DSL?

Yes, you can connect multiple computers to a single DSL internet connection. This requires purchasing and setting up a router to create a home or office network that shares the DSL connection. While some users may be comfortable with this setup, we recommend seeking assistance from someone familiar with network installation if you’re unsure. WNMC is unable to provide support for customer-owned networks.

What is the difference between download and upload speed?

Download speed refers to how quickly data travels from the internet to your device (e.g., streaming videos, loading web pages). Upload speed is how fast data travels from your device to the internet (e.g., sending emails, uploading photos, video calls). Most internet activities primarily use download speed.

Troubleshooting

My internet connection seems fine, but no websites are loading. What should I do?

If no websites are loading, it suggests an issue with your internet connection or equipment. First, try restarting your modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, then plugging them back in. Wait for all lights to stabilize before testing your connection again.

What do web browser error messages like '404 Not Found' or '500 Internal Server Error' mean?

These messages indicate specific issues on the website’s server. A ‘404 Not Found’ means the specific page requested doesn’t exist. A ‘500 Internal Server Error’ means the website’s server encountered an unexpected problem. In both cases, the issue is with the website, not your connection.

Why am I experiencing very slow connection and download speeds?

Slow speeds can be due to various factors. The website or download server you’re accessing might be experiencing high traffic or issues, which can affect your overall speed. Additionally, a temporary glitch with your computer or modem can cause slowdowns. If waiting a few minutes doesn’t help, try restarting your computer and your modem to see if the problem improves.

Why can I load some Web pages but not others?

This usually indicates an issue with the specific website rather than your internet connection. The website’s server might be temporarily offline, the page may have moved, or it could be experiencing high traffic. First, verify you have the correct URL. If the problem persists, wait a few minutes and try reloading the page. If other websites load fine, the issue is likely with that specific site.

Why can't I connect to the Internet?

If you’re unable to connect to the Internet, you should typically see an error message. Please note down the exact error message you receive, as this information is crucial for troubleshooting. For specific assistance, please visit our contact page.

Why is my internet slower during certain times of the day?

Internet speeds can sometimes fluctuate during peak usage hours (e.g., evenings when more people in your neighborhood are online). This is due to network congestion, as many users share the same infrastructure. While we constantly monitor and upgrade our network, temporary slowdowns can occur during these busy periods.
